The people of England are being short-changed!
Cameron, Clegg & Miliband should never have interfered in the Scotland Referendum once it had been framed to exclude England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In doing so, they exemplified the public school ethos of ‘having your cake and eat it’ or ‘don’t do as I do, do as I say’! In short, their conduct was contemptible.
The whole situation was the product of yet another Cameron misjudgement which, as usual was born not of principle but expedience! The matter of Scotland’s status within or without the UK was [is?] a reserved matter! Importantly, in 2010 the SNP won merely 6 out of the MPs Scotland sends to the British Parliament to deal with reserved matters. Clearly, the fact of Cameron’s father having been Scottish explains his partiality to Scotland at England’s expense.
We were repeatedly told by Cameron and the Coalition Government that the question of whether Scotland should secede from the UK was matter solely for voters in Scotland to determine. However, whilst the previously mentioned three party leaders were content to exclude the people of England from any active participation in the Scotland Referendum and its accompanying campaign, they themselves abused their positions in order to actively influence its outcome; this was hypocrisy on a grand scale! Voters in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have been treated with contempt!
Paradoxically, in striving to secure a firm ‘No’ result, the panic stricken actions of Cameron, Clegg & Miliband have created yet more problems. They have made commitments for which they have no electoral mandates nor authority. One of these arbitrary commitments is to allocate £1,600 more a year for every Scot indefinitely. In doing so, they have disregarded England’s interests.
In order to head off reaction in England, they vaguely speak of various remedies: ‘English votes on English laws’ [which more appropriately would be ‘English votes on England’s laws’], ‘constitutional conventions’, devolving powers to city regions, consulting the people of England, Scotland and Wales etc etc. Even so, there has been no mention of a separate parliament for England nor, most importantly, of a referendum in England to decide that issue.
Voters in England should not be deceived: the British Parliament still schemes to nullify England’s majority quite simply because Scots in particular will not tolerate any collective opinion other than their own. The intention is to balkanise England by creating ‘city regions’!
City regions will enable the British Government to conceal the extent to which England as a nation is short-changed; there would be no England Budget, the equivalent of the current £29billion for Scotland. Furthermore, it will enable central government to play off one city region against another, to vary the city region funding according to the political complexion of particular city regions and, ultimately, to withdraw such funding.
Despite the ill-considered and intemperate screeching from various local councillors in Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds and elsewhere [who, after all, are merely the counter parts of those in Rotherham, Rochdale and Doncaster!], city regions compare badly with the national settlements for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland!
It is significant that both print and broadcast British news media have been largely silent about the nature of the three party leaders’ conduct, that it was inconsistent, unprincipled and that it fell well short of the standards required in the pursuit of public affairs. now, we may confidently aver that, not only are British politicians largely unrepresentative but, likewise, the British press is similarly unrepresentative and significantly unbalanced. No wonder many of us now choose to obtain news of current affairs etc from Sky News, CNN, Russia Today, Al Jazeera and other sources.
The highly centralised British political system is so rotten that it supplies the already wealthy political parties with various forms of public funding and has arranged to exclude news coverage of any new or minor parties striving to gain the attention of voters. So much for voter choice, so much for British democracy!
By their actions, British politicians and the news media [the BBC in particular] have effectively given impetus to UKIP because it is seen by voters to be the only party which opposes uncontrolled immigration and wants withdrawal from the EU. The English Democrats Party also campaigns on these issues but, uniquely, wants a separate parliament in England and now campaigns to leave the UK as the only way of obtaining powers to determine for England to determine her own affairs.
The English Democrats Party has scant resources, receives no public funding and is deliberately ignored by the media.
The English Democrats Party will continue to campaign for democracy in England and for the English to be properly represented.
The English Democrats Party, the only party to put first the interests of England and her people!
