In its somewhat Kafkaesque mode, the Coalition Government intends to make GP medical records more accessible for research in a semi-anonymous form.
This is solely an ENGLAND NHS initiative with (apparently) Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland being exempted . . . for the time being at least.
Apparently, patients in England are being asked to consent to their personal medical records being included in this dodgy scheme. I say ‘apparently’ quite simply because I have had no direct communication from the England NHS or my GP about this matter, which is disturbing given the ‘plan’ is that patients will have the sole option of ‘opting out’!
If we do not actively ‘opt-out’, we shall be deemed to have ‘opted-in’ ie to have consented to the use of our medical records as indicated in the news media.
In common with many (most?) England NHS patients, I have NEVER seen my medical records. Therefore, the situation may be accurately described, for me at least, as one in which I can do nothing and give UNINFORMED NON-CONSENT or object and give UNINFORMED DISAPPROVAL. Schumm choice this is! Hobson’s as usual!
Now why should I agree to the use of my personal information by the clowns presiding over this matter; why I don’t even know whether they are English!
Will no one save us from these pesky, incompetent Brits!
